Packing (braided packing) is also called sealing packing. It is usually braided with soft threadlike fabrics. In general, its cross section shows square, rectangular or circular strips being packed in the sealing chamber, and then being sealed. Packing seal was first used to block the leakage of liquid flow by packing cotton, hemp and other fibers into the leak passage. It was primarily used as the shaft seal of water-lifting machinery. Because packing comes from a wide range of sources, is easily processed and cheap, seals firmly and can be operated simply, so it has been used up to now.

Nowadays, packing is widely used in the rotary shaft seal of centrifugal pump, compressor, vacuum pump, mixer and ship propeller, the reciprocating motion shaft seal of piston pump, reciprocating compressor and refrigerator, as well as the rotary seal of various valve stems.

Braided packing: Braided packing is braided with expanded graphite yarn. It is often used in most situations except for strong oxidants. It can be used in boiling water, high temperature and high pressure steam, heat transfer medium, oil, acid, alkali, hydrogen, ammonia, organic solvent, hydrocarbon, cryogenic liquid and other media. It is a unique new type of seal packing.
